Why Books Make FANTASTIC Mother’s Day Gifts

Tired of giving the same ol’ gift to your dear sweet mum? We can’t blame you; it’s easy to make the mistake of being a lame gift giver. We’ve all been there! But you know what is the recipe for success with gift giving? Thinking outside the box. In this article, we will do our best to convince you that giving a book is the answer as well as provide a few basic ideas, just in case you’re lost in the dark.

Why Books?!
For a Mother’s Day gift this year, here are a few reasons why you should let the book say the words that you can’t!

  1. Thoughtful – No one knows your mom like you do, give her a gift that shows it. There are books for any and every interest – art books, cookbooks, or even books about books!
  2. Economical – A greeting card is a single piece of folded paper with an envelope and usually ranges in price from one to ten dollars. The alternative is a book, which abounds with pieces of folded paper with a hard or soft protective case and ranges in price from a few dollars to millions of dollars (just in case your mom was especially deserving this year).
  3. Inspiring – Good stories take us away on journeys, but great stories change our view of the world, as it is those great stories that we return to time and again. Maybe it’s time for that old paperback copy, that your mom has re-read over and over, to be upgraded to a new hardcover or a rare first edition copy. Or maybe it’s an author she’s been raving about but hasn’t had the time or courage to try something new. Either way, you’ll provide more inspiration with a book than pretty much any other gift available.
  4. Relaxing – Books are the great escape to different places or times without the hassle or expense of actually traveling. Or if your mom is undertaking a summer trip, a book is a great way to pass the down time. The best part about a book is that it can be read leisurely; there is no expiration date.
  5. Unique Experience – Greek philosopher Heraclitus is known for the saying, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” Similarly, no woman ever reads the same book twice; each and every book (whether new or re-read) is a personal experience with a fresh perspective.
  6. Everlasting – Unlike candy, books can be consumed over and over again. Unlike flowers, books add color to your shelves and mind all year round. It’s a gift that continually provides reflection and satisfaction!

Book Ideas
Every single person has specific preferences on their favorite genres, authors, titles, and even the types of books they like to collect (such as size, color, and binding type). If you find yourself completely lost as to what type of book would best suit your loved one, here are a few basic ideas of where to start.

  1. Outlander (Diana Gabaldon) – This series is hot right now, a time traveller falling for a brutish Clansmen, who wouldn’t want to read it?!
  2. Mastering the Art of French Cooking (Julia Childs) – Nearly every kitchen has home recipes and a handful of cookbooks on hand. However, in our eyes, any kitchen without a copy of Julia Childs’ French Cooking series is incomplete!
  3. Area specific books – Books on their local hometown, places they’re planning to visit, or areas they absolutely are enamored with such as New York City or Paris are typically enthusiastically received.
  4. Biographies – Name a prominent character in history and there are likely 2-3 different biographies/autobiographies available. The best part about a biography is that they’re informational, but also inspiring with stories about each person’s attempt to overcome adversity.
  5. Romance Classics – While we give a few examples of book titles below, there are numerous works available for famous authors. If you can locate a nice binding, beyond a simple paperback, you’re giving not only a lovely reading copy but also a wonderful decorative piece for any home library!
    • Jane Austen (example: Pride and Prejudice)
    • The Brontes (example: Jane Eyre)
    • Thomas Hardy (example: Far From the Madding Crowd)
    • Louisa May Alcott (example: Little Women)
    • Combination of many popular authors in a boxset

So there you have it, a concise argument for why books are the obvious choice for a Mother’s Day gift, as well as a couple of options. And please whatever you do, don’t opt for the gift card!
